Longlevens slipped to a disappointing 31–12 defeat away at Thornbury in a game shaped by tough conditions and a punishing mid-first-half spell.
Played on a heavy, rain-soaked, sloping pitch, the visitors made a clear tactical decision to play up the slope in the first half, aiming to restrict Thornbury’s scoring opportunities before using the gradient to their advantage after the break. For the opening 20 minutes, the plan worked well. Longlevens defended with discipline and matched Thornbury physically, keeping the scoreboard under control.
However, the game unravelled quickly. Lapses in concentration, a passive approach in the contact area and some poor kicking decisions handed momentum to the hosts. Thornbury ruthlessly capitalised, running in four tries in a devastating 10-minute period without reply to take firm control of the contest.
To their credit, Longlevens showed a response after the interval. Effort levels improved and the forwards continued to work tirelessly in difficult conditions. The Griffins were rewarded when Ty Grant crossed for a well-earned score, but despite periods of pressure, Longlevens struggled to find any real cutting edge in attack and often looked blunt going forward.
Thornbury added another try to effectively put the game beyond doubt before Longlevens grabbed a late consolation, Tom Barton finishing well to give the travelling support something to cheer at the end.
While the pack’s work rate could not be faulted, the lack of attacking threat proved costly. Ongoing player availability issues have plagued the side all season, and Saturday was no exception.
Longlevens now have a week off to regroup before a stern test awaits, with league leaders Trowbridge due to visit Longford Lane.
