Longlevens Seconds welcomed Ross on Wye to Longford Lane on Saturday afternoon. After Matson 2s pulled out earlier in the year, this was the first opportunity for Longlevens to play a home fixture. The super 2s are riding high in confidence after a strong win away at Smiths, Ross on Wye are yet to win a fixture this season leaving Levens firm favourites to win.
The message going into the game wasn’t to be complacent. The warm up went well, and Levens received the kick off from Ross on Wye. Possession traded back and forth for the first few minutes of the game before Longlevens managed to retain possession and make a break up the left hand side. The ball was recycled right for fullback Mike Yorke to hand off a would-be defender and score just to the right of the posts. Unconverted (5-0)
From the resulting kick off the Levens scored again. The kick off was taken well by the pack who carried up to the Levens 10 meter line. The ball was then sent wide right with the first pod playing a hot out the back to fly half Zak Oliver. The ball was moved along the backline to allow Ty a 1 on 1 with his opposite man. He diligently handed him off to sprint clear and run around the full back for Levens second try. (12-0.)
Levens were comfortable then, and for the remainder of the half a strong Levens side scored three more tries through a returning Elliot Norwood, Elliot Parsons and Ollie Smith to bring the half time score at 31-0.
The half time message was to keep the pressure on Ross on Wye. Don’t allow them sufficient possession and keep up the standards in defence and attack.
The second half was littered with great team tries. The first being for Fred Mcgee who has had a great season so far. From a line out just outside the Ross on Wye 22, Fred found his jumper before tucking himself in at the back of the maul while the rest of the pack drove Ross on Wye back over their try line for a simple dot down.
Ty and Elliot Norwood then got on the score sheet to bring the score to 52-0. A returning Fox used his added timber to score a short crash ball off his wing to make the score 57 -0.
Ty scored the last try to seal the game. A great team effort with Mike Yorke, Zak Oliver, Trev, Elliot Norwood, Elliot Parsons all getting the ball in and out of their hands to give Ty a walk in hattrick in the far corner of the pitch.
The game then finished early with the final score 62-0.
Man of the match went to Ty. Growing in confidence each week Ty scored three great tries and was picked out by Ross on Wye for Man of the Match.
Dick of the day had to go to Henry ‘Bull’ Gardner. The ball was kicked over the top by Zak Oliver and as if the ball was wrapped in a matadors red cloth the bull chased hard. Hacking the ball on and collecting it in the Ross 22. Unfortunately, the bull was chopped down just before the ross line. With a bad case of white line fever, the Bull turned Slug and tried to wriggle his way to score only to be penalised for double movement. A great effort turned DOTD.
An honourable mention goes to Alex Cowie. Alex almost had it for playing all of two minutes before a yellow card and short game ended his afternoon.
The super 2s travel away to Widden Old Boys on Saturday for a top of the table clash with the winner putting breathing space between them and the sides below in the table. A huge week of training is ahead!
