Longlevens 2s started their league campaign a week late after an injury to a Cheltenham Civil Service player postponed the first fixture, resulting in the Super 2s opening their campaign away at Ledbury 2s.
The boys warmed up well and hit the ground running. From kick-off, Levens were on the front foot. Sharp distribution from Euan, Zak, and Furley put the big runners into space and carved early inroads into the Ledbury defence. On the five-minute mark, a Ledbury infringement gave Zak the chance to kick to the corner, and from the resulting lineout, Elliot Parsons crashed over from close range. In a sign of things to come, the conversion was missed.
Levens struck again shortly after. Strong carries from the pack and Elliot Norwood took play deep into Ledbury territory, before quick ball and slick hands sent Parsons over for his second unconverted try.
The next score came through an excellent interception from Norwood, turning defence into attack. The ball was moved wide to Ty, who beat multiple defenders down the wing before popping inside for Mike Yorke to finish.
Levens’ final try came on the 25-minute mark, with full-back Yorke breaking from halfway and finishing just right of the posts – unconverted.
Unfortunately, that was as good as it got. Veteran centre Ben Furley got crunched, leaving the pitch injured and shortly after scrum half Euan followed the same fate. With them went much of Levens’ composure in attack. Despite sustained pressure, a mix of white-line fever and errant passing saw several chances go begging. Most notably from earlier try scorers Mike and Elliot P.
The second half turned into a defensive grind. With few calls going their way, the boys tackled wave after wave of Ledbury attack and the front row made a huge effort scrumming against a larger pack every few minutes. Eventually, the fatigued griffins conceded five minutes from time, and a final consolation try on the whistle saw the game finish Longlevens 2s 20 – 12 Ledbury 2s.
A great outing for the Super 2s away against a strong Ledbury side and leaving with 5 points. Many sides will struggle to come away with the same results. The 2s next league outing is against Cheltenham CS on 1st November.
