Longlevens produced a much-improved performance at Longford Lane on Saturday, narrowly losing 17–20 to Chippenham in a spirited contest that earned the home side a deserved losing bonus point.
Following a difficult outing the previous week, Longlevens demonstrated significant progress, showing determination, organisation, and a strong work ethic throughout. Despite a reshuffled back line featuring several players in unfamiliar positions, the team adapted well and competed effectively in all areas of the game.
The first half was evenly contested, with both sides defending resolutely. Longlevens opened their account through Matt Fatica, who finished well to level the score at 5–5 going into the break.
Chippenham began the second half strongly, scoring twice to move into a 15–5 lead. However, Longlevens responded impressively, with Isaac Meredith crossing the line to narrow the deficit to 10–15. The visitors then added another try to extend their advantage to 10–20, but Longlevens refused to concede defeat.
A second try from Fatica, converted by Ed Glanville, brought the score to 17–20 and set up a tense final ten minutes. Longlevens pressed hard in search of a decisive score, spending sustained periods in the opposition half, but Chippenham’s defence held firm to secure the win.
There were many positives for Longlevens to take from the performance. Mike Yorke, the veteran winger and 2nd XV captain, deserves particular credit for stepping in at scrum-half and performing admirably in the unfamiliar role. The team’s collective spirit and commitment were evident throughout, and the display marked clear progress from the previous week.
Longlevens now have a break next weekend before returning to action with an away fixture at North Dorset in two weeks’ time. With several players set to return to the selection mix, the squad will look to build on this encouraging performance and convert effort into results.
