After a wait of 14 months, senior men's rugby returned to Longford Lane, albeit in the form of adapted laws. COVID restrictions mean that grass roots rugby must be played without any mauls or scrums, so a fast-paced game was anticipated.

Unfortunately, the weather wasn't on our side, but that didn't dampen the spirits, with Longlevens able to field a squad of 25. Many more regular trainers are waiting for their chance next week, proving participation is not an issue.

The game started with a bang, with Levens forwards rampaging through the Spartans defence at will, taking the game into the opposition 22. After building a good platform and looking likely to score, a Spartans player unfortunately broke an ankle, meaning the game was paused whilst we swapped pitches.

After the re-start Levens seemed to lose their way, and found themselves defending in their 22 for long periods of the first quarter. Spartans scored two tries during this period, playing a simple, but effective game plan. Levens were desperate to put the shape and game plan they'd be practicing all year into action, but the skills weren't sharp enough in the wet weather and possession was turned over on a regular basis. Going into half time at 12 nil down, the coaches and captain set about planning for a more successful second half.

Longlevens started the half positively, playing a more direct game, and kicking for territory. They were camped in the Spartans half for most of the first 20 minutes, and utilised strong ball carriers, notably, Jed Holman-Jones. Poor skills and turnovers at the ruck enabled Spartans to get a foot hold in the half, and against the run of play, they scored a third try to take the score to 17nil. The last 20 minutes of the half were all Longlevens, and they showed great spirit to put phases together, and start to play using the shape they had been coached to play. Brad Wilkins was beginning to put them in the right areas, and from the resulting pressure Ben Collier powered his way over for a converted try. This was followed quickly by another converted try from Billy Hambling, bringing the score to 14-17.

With victory in their grasp, Longlevens continued to pressure the Spartans line, but it wasn't to be. The players and coaches were obviously disappointed to lose, but much was learned in defeat. Credit to the players for trying to play an expansive game plan, incorporating what they'd been training for during the year off, but conditions made it difficult.

Next week sees both first and second teams playing Gordon League, so all 40+ players that have been training will get the chance to impress.
