Longlevens travelled down to Gordano this Saturday and came up short in what was a disappointing afternoon.
With a much-changed side from last week the team were disjointed from the warm up and this translated into the match itself. However, it was the Griffins who scored first through Tom Barton, who finished very well, ghosting through defenders to make the score 0-7 after only five minutes.
Unfortunately, this was as good as it got during the first half as Gordano scored five tries at regular intervals and built a 29-7 lead at half time. The tries were coming through passive defence and turning the ball over far too often. Gordano, to their credit, capitalised well on the mistakes and missed tackles, but the tries conceded were very much of our own making.
Some home truths were dispatched at half time and Longlevens reacted more positively. Gordano were the first to score after only five minutes of the half, but to their credit the Griffins came back into the game and began to shore up the defence and string phases together. Some powerful running by the forwards gave them good field position and this allowed Matt Fatica to cross for two tries, using his strength and tenacity both times. This gave some hope of at least picking up a bonus point, but also maybe sneaking the win. However, it wasn’t to be and despite winning the second half and stopping what looked like a hefty score line in the first half, the Griffins ultimately came away from Gordano with nothing.
The targets this season are to win all home games and get at least a point on the road, this wasn’t achieved and we will look back on this fixture as one that was, on paper, very winnable.
A rest week follows before we welcome Keynsham to Longford Lane, #UTFG.
