26/9/2021 Longlevens MAR vs Cardiff Chiefs Match report
It was a cloudy but dry afternoon at Longlevens RFC for the first official match of the season. There was two debuts for Longlevens which were Rich Morris and Sam Tindall.
Longlevens started the game as the stronger side following a really good run from Scrum Half Jez Wilson until a monster hit put in on him by one of the Cardiff forwards, which then set the tone for the match. Following another really good run from debutant Rich Morris, Longlevens were the first team to get onto the score board when Cardiff Chiefs tried a fancy out of the door pass which feel into the grateful hands of debutant Rich Morris for him to run in under the posts unopposed for his first try for Longlevens on debut. Reece Joyner added the conversion.
From then on it was all Cardiff Chiefs. They worked a really good overlap to score in the corner. They added the conversion too. A Incredible turnover from Longlevens fly half Shane Daley stopped another certain try for Cardiff Chiefs, A stunning try saving tackle from Connor Scantlebury kept Cardiff at bay. Cardiff were soon back on the score sheet as they managed to get through a tackle and stretch to score the try. Conversion added.
Shane Daley made a scintillating run for Longlevens. Unfortunately Longlevens couldn’t capitalise on this. Connor Scantlebury was held up over the line which kind of stopped Longlevens momentum but the boys didn’t give up. Going into the 3rd quarter Longlevens were 14-7 down. Cardiff put a really good move together and scored in the corner. Following a Cardiff line out on the 5m, Scott Mcshane put in a stupendous try saving tackle to deny Cardiff. Then Gary Shaw for Longlevens put in an absolute monster hit which proved that the boys were not backing down. Cardiff did get another try, however, following a knock on from Longlevens. Conversion missed. Another great run from Connor Scantlebury which Longlevens couldn’t capitalise on.
Full time Longlevens 7 Cardiff Chiefs 24
Man of the match for Longlevens Connor Scantlebury.
His defence was impeccable and was strong in attack also.
Special mentions to debutant Rich Morris and Gary Shaw who both had solid games too. Congratulations to Rich Morris on a try on debut.
There was also a goodbye at Longlevens today too. Today was Gary Shaw’s last game before he returns to Scotland. Gary has been such a key part of the longlevens mixed ability team ever since he joined. Garry will be sorely missed by everyone. The players and coaches for Longlevens mixed ability would like to say a massive thankyou to Grry for all the dedication and commitment towards the team and would like to wish Garry all the best on his future endeavours.
We would also like to thank the Cardiff player who agreed to ref the game at the last minute we really appreciate it. Finally, we would like to say a massive thankyou to the Cardiff Chiefs for coming down and playing us in what was a really physical match.
