Widden Old Boys 20-53 Longlevens

Longlevens played this rearranged league game knowing a bonus point win would take them joint top.

Levens started at a fast tempo, creating quick ball and moving Widden around the pitch, creating holes. From a penalty the ball was kicked to the corner to set up a driving maul,  however, the line out was fumbled. Luckily the ball found its way to Tom Harvey who powered over for an unconverted try.

Levens then deviated from the game plan and tried to go wide too early, this resulted in Wilkins throwing a long pass that was intercepted, conceding a try under the posts.

Levens then began to put the phases together and drew more penalties. From the resulting line out Edwards squeezed his way over for a converted try. However, as in previous games, they conceded straight after. From a Widden line out the ball came to their 12, he jacked back towards the blindside, seemingly going nowhere. Rees was poised to make the tackle, but the sniper on the grassy knoll was on target and he crumpled into the ground, allowing Widden to score.

Two penalties were exchanged before Levens found their game again. From a line out in the Widden 22, the ball was overthrown and Sam Collier managed to secure possession. He made yards before offloading to Philips to crash over, making the half time score 15-22.

Levens knew the first half performance wasn’t up to standard and knew improvement was needed. Two minutes in and they showed their true colours. Baker sniped down the blindside and offloaded to Philips, he drew in defenders and passed to young winger York who showed good strength to go over in the corner. Two minutes later Levens scored again following a quick tap penalty. The ball was offloaded numerous times before finding its was to Collier who went over.

The game went quiet for 15 minutes, both sides conceding pens and it became stop start. After gaining a foothold Levens worked their way into the Widden 22. From a scrum wide on the left they executed a pre planned backs move for Wilkins to dummy and go over. Widden got themselves on the score sheet before Levens created two final tries. The first coming from a turnover scrum, man of the match Hancock benefiting and sprinting clear to score. The game was finished with York going over for his second. Wilkins was again good with the boot to make the final score 20-53.

This was a great result, especially the second half, and the improved defensive effort.
