Longlevens made the short trip across Gloucester to face local rivals Old Centralians, but it was a tough afternoon for the Griffins, who fell to a 26–12 defeat after a sluggish and error-strewn display.
From the outset, Longlevens struggled to match the physicality and directness of Old Cents, who executed a simple but highly effective game plan. Using big one-out runners to punch holes through the defensive line, the home side dominated the gain line as the Griffins’ tackling proved too high and too soft. The missed collisions and lack of line speed allowed Cents to dictate territory and tempo, and by half-time the scoreboard reflected their dominance, with Longlevens trailing 21–0.
The second half began in similar fashion, with Old Cents crossing again early to stretch their lead to 26–0. Only then did Longlevens begin to find some rhythm. In the final 20 minutes, the Griffins showed flashes of the attacking rugby they’re capable of, crossing for two well-worked tries through Isaac Meredith and Piers Fortey, one of which was converted by Ed Glanville. However, the late surge came too late to threaten the outcome.
There were, however, positives to take. Seven 18-year-olds featured in the matchday squad, gaining valuable first-team experience that will serve them well moving forward. Among the players, Ed Glanville stood out with a composed all-round display, while Jed Holman-Jones led the forwards from the front, working tirelessly in tough conditions.
Longlevens will need a strong response next week, with renewed focus on defensive intensity and physicality if they are to get back to winning ways.
