Longlevens entertained Gordano on a very cold and Grey wintery day this last Saturday. They were very keen to avenge the defeat earlier in the season, and despite the conditions, they put in an excellent shift.
The conditions weren’t conducive to good handling and this was really the only downside to the Griffins performance and the reason it was only 10-0 at half time.
Two good tries were scored in the opening 40 however, with the first being a good finish from Jake Fox after impressive build up play through the phases. The second came curtesy of Kory Holman-Jones, who was on the end of a sweeping move left, Kory showed good strength and power to go over.
The rest of the half the Griffins showed plenty of endeavour but couldn’t finish anything off, finishing the half 10 nil up.
The second half started in much the same way with some very good phase play and forwards working hard to get over the gain line. The Griffins were attempting to move the ball but it just wasn’t sticking. They were controlling the game well however and Gordano weren’t showing any signs of scoring.
On the hour the ball started to stick and Longlevens put the game to bed with four very good scores. Matt Fatica was the star of the half as he bagged an impressive hattrick. He was a livewire in the loose and showed his pace and power to go over three times. The fourth try of the half was a great finish from Isaac Meredith who sprinted down the left touchline to dot down in the corner. Two of the six tries were converted by James Butler, who tested the Gordano defence all day and orchestrated play very well.
It was a satisfying win and good to avenge the earlier defeat. The conditions limited what the Griffins are capable of, and on a dry day this would have been 60-70 points. However, to keep them to nil was pleasing and sets up what will be a big game next week at home to Stow-on-the-Wold, #UTFG
