LONGLEVENS RUGBY ANNOUNCE GROUND BREAKING MEDICAL PACKAGE AND CONCUSSION SCREENING FOR ALL ADULT AND JUNIOR PLAYERS

Longlevens Rugby are pleased to announce a ground breaking medical partnership with NM Sports Therapy who will provide a first-class rehabilitation, matchday cover and concussion screening service to ALL of our playing members - Seniors, Colts, Mixed Ability and Juniors! Not only is professional coverage going to be present on match days, but club wide concussion screening will take place to help all playing members to recover quickly and effectively from injury.

Covid-19 prevented rugby as we know and love it last year. During that time Longlevens Rugby looked long and hard and providing the best possible experience to its membership. At the forefront of those plans was putting in place excellent medical support. There is no getting away from the fact that Rugby Union is a risky sport – but it is because of those risks that we love the game. However, there is an important obligation to create as safe an environment as possible for our players.

This new level of investment into medical coverage is the perfect example of how hiring and buying food and drink from the clubhouse means supporting the rugby. Membership also needs to be justified, now more than ever in these trying times, so the new investment is hoped to reassure sponsors and members that rugby services are at the centre of their membership.

NM Sports Therapy is a Cheltenham based Sports Therapy business owned by Naomi Huggins. They have an accessible Sports Injury Clinic with 7 brilliant practitioners in Cheltenham and cover a variety of sports clubs and events. All of their practitioners are Graduate Sports Therapists and members of The Society of Sports Therapists (SST).

Director of Rugby Andy Deacon said: “Naomi and her team are incredible professionals. I hope the membership are reassured that Longlevens Rugby are going above and beyond to put their welfare first. As we prepare for pre-season I would encourage any adult or child thinking about putting on their boots to really think about joining Longlevens Rugby and joining a club that is invested in their experience.”

Chairman Chris Yorke said: “When discussing rugby plans it is so easy for medical provision to end up at the bottom of the list. Instead, player welfare is the highest priority at Longlevens Rugby. I am particularly excited for the junior section and the reassurance the coverage will bring to current and new members”.

The experience level of the team that will be working with Longlevens Rugby is a gigantic step above the old school bucket and sponge. With Sports Trauma Management qualifications under their belts, along with their excellent injury assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation skills; the Longlevens Rugby Medical team bring elite level implementation to our club’s athletes. The team will also be providing season-long placement opportunities to University of Gloucestershire Sports Therapy students, to help develop the Sports Therapists of the future.

How does this help my child?

Having qualified medical staff at home events & Colts games will ensure your child gets appropriate management of acute injuries. Their advice will assist with helping your child recover from injuries safely and effectively.

What is baseline concussion screening? How does this make my child safer?

Baseline concussion screening is a necessary part of any contact sports. Concussion is a form of brain injury after the brain has received trauma such as in a significant whiplash motion or a collision. They are often seen in rugby during contact, mostly during a tackle. Of course – we run by the RFU Guidelines meaning if a concussion is suspected, the player is removed from play and managed according to guidelines. So, if in doubt – sit them out. By getting a baseline, medical professionals can then compare side-line, symptom-based results to this baseline to help manage a concussion. These can also be used to track mental, physical, and cognitive symptoms back to that players norm/baseline.

What do I need to do & When do I need to do it?

Nothing yet – we will announce dates for junior screening days through your child’s coach. You can sign up when the link goes out and will be required to complete a medical form for your child which will also contain consent for screening. The screening days will also include parent workshops for both rugby recovery and concussion education.

Do all rugby clubs in Gloucestershire do this?

No – RFU guidelines state for Tier 8 clubs (which Longlevens Rugby currently is), only a First aider is required for games (which our coaches hold). The standard of coverage that will be provided is that of Tier 7 to Championship level. The medical team will be providing much more than the standard local rugby club medical cover.
